Unique book.
Most evolution books are unipolar with univ guys saying "random mutations," and the ID guys saying "intelligent designer" like opposite crowds in a beer commercial (tastes great, less filling).
This book goes way beyond that with explanations of mechanisms to generate genetic variety including endosymbiosis (flagella, chloroplasts, mitochondria), horizontal (lateral) gene transfer with plasmids, transposons, retrotransposons, retroviruses, epigenetics etc.
I majored in evol biology in college and have read numerous books on evol so I'm familiar with the controversies. A biologist said to me, "Why you reading a book by an engineer? What does he know about biology?"
Perry Marshall's engineering and programming background and brilliant mind have enabled him to understand DNA and DNA editing better than biologists.

Let me start by saying that I found this book well worth the time to read it. For anyone whose mind isn't made up already, you will find it interesting.
Now, let me explain why I don't give it 5 stars. There are several reasons.
1. There is no easy way to get to the supplements promised and mentioned throughout the book. This is a website problem and I suspect will be fixed soon but it's annoying now.
2. The book is like a Popular Science survey piece with all the good and bad that entails. It's a great place to start understanding the topic but, for those of us who are scientifically inclined, there's a bit too little detail. Fortunately, there are extensive references so that one can at least read the scientific articles in favor of the cited mechanisms. From there, one would have to search to find the opposing points of view and read their work too. It would have been nice if more of that was included here.
3. The analogy between DNA and code was both good and bad. It worked for me as a broad-brush picture but at the detailed level I think it has some issues.
4. I expected to read more about the model of how the "Swiss Army Knife" would be used by a cell or other organism as it adapted to the environment. There wasn't much detail on that.
5. I expected more on the irreducible complexity argument. There's just enough to set up the argument but not enough to really address it fully.
6. I think Perry is right in Chapter 29 that many of the "random process only" evolutionists really object to the idea of a caring God allowing so much pain and suffering. But after introducing that argument, he punts completely on fleshing it out. I was hoping for more.
Bottom line - The above complaints aside, I found this book enlightening because he tries to avoid the faith-based dogma of both the "random process only" crowd and the Intelligent Design crowd and seek a middle ground. I liked the idea of focusing on evolutionary processes that can be replicated or proven in the lab rather than just hypothesized. The provision of extensive citations allows the reader to continue the study for themselves.
Amazing book!!!
In the tradition of Charles Darwin and Richard Dawkins, this is a comprehensive (long) and academic work with lots of technical data.
Darwin talked about a "tendency toward improvement" with random mutations and he was right; to start with nothing and get to the complex universe we see today, there is no way around it, there had to be a lot of "improvements". He knew it had to be, but he couldn't explain it.
Dawkins said those improvements happen in the genes. And he was right. Changes in DNA are the only way that an organism can evolve to the next level.
But neither Darwin or Dawkins explained how it happens.
Perry Marshall comes along with this book and explains what Darwin and Dawkins couldn't.
If you are an atheist, don't expect to like it.
This book is not a quick or easy read. Block out some time to get through it.
An eye opening book. Evolution that fits better than what we are being taught. Thought provoking for anyone with an open mind. Explained well, not over my head.
Perry Marshall exposes proven scientific facts about the remarkable power of adaptation built into all living creatures. Furthermore this books completely debunks Darwinian evolution with hardcore undeniable scientific proof. A must read for anyone questioning the origin of life.
I have always had trouble with Evolution, but it started with Coppedge's "Evolution Possible or Impossible?" which I think is 5 decades old by now, which simply asked how the entire system could appear ex nihilo.
Marshall has both simplified the problem and shown what would have to be proven. It is not the system that is impossible, but the core of the system - a code with encoder and decoder.
While getting to this key insight and cutting through the fog of arguments on both sides, he takes us on a quick tour of current genetics and related biology where cells do adapt and "evolve", but by pre-existing mechanisms which aren't random, but by cutting and pasting, disabling, enabling, or duplicating code.
I have been following the logic of Darwinists and neo-Darwinists for decades. This is the first time I've been convinced that there is enough real science to take macroevolution seriously. If you read this book, you might have a paradigm shift. Wonderfully thought-provoking and fun to read.
If you only read one book on evolution, this is the one.
